• The Office of Dental Health (ODH) promotes the oral health and well-being of Alameda County residents, mainly for children, youth and young adults. This is achieved by: assessing the community’s needs, providing dental health education, providing linkages to needed resources, and collaborating with community partners. We also provide some direct services, including dental screenings, fluoride varnish and sealants through our school-based programs and at WIC sites. We strive to decrease health disparities and ensure oral health equity by increasing access to care for Medi-Cal recipients, the uninsured and under-insured. We work with policymakers to develop strategies to promote oral health and prevent oral disease.

  • The Medi-Cal Dental Program provides free or low cost dental services to children and adults who receive Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program.  Visit https://dental.acphd.org/ and click on “Find a Medi-Cal dentist” for the most up-to-date list or see attached document.

    HEALTHY SMILES

    The Healthy Smiles Program provides gap coverage for urgent dental needs for families with children who are uninsured or underinsured. Families receive assistance with scheduling an appointment or referral to a dentist within Alameda County for preventive care or dental treatment needs at no cost. Office of Dental Health staff assess the urgency of the dental need, the child’s insurance status, income requirements and the age of the child to determine program eligibility. Families are referred to Health Insurance Technicians for assistance with enrolling in medical and dental insurance or other county services.

    The Office of Dental Health provides dental education and services to Alameda County Public Health Department’s (ACPHD) Women Infant Children Program (WIC) clients at four ACPHD’s WIC locations. This collaboration is designed to increase the number of low-income infants, toddlers and young children who receive preventive oral health care and access to dental services. ODH clinical dental staff provide dental screening and fluoride varnish application for children 0-5 years of age. Parents receive oral health education, anticipatory guidance catered to their child’s specific needs, and help scheduling a follow-up appointment with a dentist.

    • Pregnant Women

    • Must be enrolled in ACPHD’s WIC services

    • Pregnant women, parents and/or guardians receive classroom education and one-on-one individual instruction on how to care for their children’s teeth; and

    • Children receive an oral assessment, fluoride varnish application, and referrals to dentists for needed treatment
