- Basic Needs:
We work with these families to provide food weekly and to link them to a list of partners who can meet their families’ unique needs so that can feel secure in their ability to provide for their children.
We schedule one-on-one appointments for you to meet with our Family Advocate at a time that works for you and you receive a follow-up call after each session. In these sessions, we can help with applications for CalFresh, Medi-Cal, and other county services. Also, La Familia works to create other ways to support you throughout the year, like extra cash-assistance grants, backpack events, and Christmas toy distributions.
- Community Health Services:
Community Health Services know that people in our community struggle to find convenient, no-cost, services that are respectful to their language and culture. We meet this need by providing welcoming, high-quality health screenings and vaccinations that help our community feel safe and respected
- Mental Health:
We work with these families to provide no-cost counseling for adults and children and can provide psychiatry services and other support when necessary. We can help you and your kids work thorough difficult emotions and experiences, create new habits, and find a route that gets you where you want to be. We partner with some schools to work with kids on campus, with specialized support for youth who have immigrated recently. For adults, we have created Alameda County’s first peer respite home, a safe space for people who are experiencing an intense emotional crisis and need to take a breath from their everyday lives.
- Substance Use Recovery:
We welcome all people (teens and adults) who find themselves in this situation and provide no-cost individual and group treatment for all forms of substance use. We match you up with a counselor who can help you create a plan, set personalized goals, and identify the right level of support for you. Sometimes this includes residential services, either for men at El Chante, our residential treatment, or for women and adolescents with our partner organizations. As you work with our team to build stability, we will help you think through triggers and intense situations to help you avoid relapse and build tools to maintain your sobriety and live your best life.
- Engagement and Advocacy:
It can be frustrating and at times feel paralyzing when people see their communities re-shaped based off of the decisions of city officials, politicians, school board members, and lawmakers who don’t know what it is like to try to make ends meet or take for granted the ability to sit in a public space on a weekday evening without having to think about a second job, child care, or translation. Our team of community advocates and parent ambassadors helps you build your own power through leadership training, education on how systems work, and looking inward to know what it means to make sure that your voice is always heard loud and clear.
- Jobs Programming:
It can be difficult to find jobs that turn into careers and make enough money to support a family. We work with teens and adults to find and showcase their unique abilities, sharpen their skills, and get great jobs.
Our friendly team members sit with you to talk about the type of work that you are most interested in and build plans for your future, which can involve paid trainings and hands-on experience. We teach you how to talk about your unique situation in a authentic, employer-friendly way and navigate the application and interview process. We can help plan for childcare needs and overcome other barriers to ensure that you can build consistency in your work habits.
- Diversion and Reentry:
We meet with you individually and provide group trainings provided by team members who have past experience with the criminal justice system and have changed their lives. We help you meet one of the most common needs, employment, by providing on-site training and paid work until we can help connect you to a local job. At the same time, we help you access counseling and substance use treatment that may be required by Probation, including providing help with transportation and other barriers.
- Developmental Disability Services:
Our team members work with you to create an individualized plan and connect you to tools and services that can help you, whatever your loved one’s age. If your loved one is a child, we help you advocate to the school district. Because we know that caregiving can be hard, we can connect you to agencies that can help you have a break. Our team members act as advocates to help you feel seen, supported, and welcome.
- Housing:
We work with those needing shelter to find and maintain units that are affordable based on the family’s income and are located in the area where the family is rooted.
Our sister organiziation, Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO), helps you connect to Alameda County’s Coordinated Entry and can offer you shared living space at either our Les Marquis Shelter or Banyan Transitional House, complete with warm meals and access to counseling. Some families are eligible for temporary rental assistance and other financial supports. Our Housing Specialist works daily with landlords to find new opportunities for you.
