Eventually you need drugs or alcohol just to feel normal, and your use of them can seriously affect your relationships, and maybe your work or school obligations. Yet despite the negative consequences, you find it impossible to stop. We can help. Sutter care centers have a variety of substance abuse programs that can help you get your life back. The first step is to meet with an addiction specialist to assess your problem. Then together we’ll develop a treatment plan that is right for you. We’ll also help your family and friends to learn more about addiction and how they can best help you get well.

If you suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction, the Merritt Peralta Institute (MPI) for Chemical Dependence Treatment can help you take your first steps toward recovery. MPI is the oldest hospital-based treatment program in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1979, MPI has treated over 15,000 patients and provided community-wide chemical dependency services to physicians, industry and the community.

Our comprehensive treatment services provide participants with the caring, ongoing support and medical attention needed to understand the disease of chemical dependency and make the transition to recovery. To meet the diverse needs of our clients MPI offers a wide range of treatment options, including, detoxification, inpatient and residential rehabilitation, day treatment, morning and evening intensive outpatient programs, family and continuing care services, and participation in our extensive MPI alumni association.
THE MPI TEAM
Our team of highly trained professionals works together to deliver customized care to each individual and their family. Program participants receive care and support from:
- Doctors
- Registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses and certified nursing assistants
- Client care specialists
- Licensed therapists
- Consulting psychiatrists
- Administrative staff
Assessments, counseling and educational services are provided by a team of chemical dependency professionals, including:
- Licensed marriage and family therapists
- Masters-level therapists
- Certified alcohol and drug counselors
Admission and Referrals: Admission into MPI begins with a free, confidential assessment interview. The MPI assessment counselor uses diagnostic and placement criteria (to match the individual with the appropriate level of care (detoxification, residential, inpatient, day treatment or outpatient). After completing the assessment, the counselor schedules an admission while MPI staff verifies insurance coverage.
Referral Phone Numbers: We understand it can be difficult for patients to agree to come to the hospital. We therefore work with you to make sure patients can successfully enter the program. Please call us at (510) 652-7000 so we can coordinate the evaluation and admission process together.
Payment: Most private insurance companies cover at least a portion of the costs of addiction treatment. We offer flexible payment schedules for people who pay without insurance assistance.
