Programs include....
Veteran Shelter and Housing:
Operation Dignity provides shelter, transitional housing, and supportive services to help veterans and their families escape the crisis of homelessness and regain stability.
We operate 15 shelter beds and 91 transitional housing beds for veterans at three properties in Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley. Veterans at all of our sites work one-on-one with a case manager to help them create a self-sufficiency plan and secure permanent housing.
On a given night, we keep more than 100 homeless veterans safe, off the street, and with access to nutritious food, peer support, and housing search services.
Mobile Street Outreach:
Our mobile outreach team is on the front line of helping people who are homeless. Each weekday, our team goes directly to homeless encampments, parks, sidewalks, and underpasses in Oakland and Alameda to provide services to people who are without housing.
First, the team assists people who are homeless with basic needs, providing bagged lunches and snacks, bottles of water, hygiene kits, rain gear, and other supplies they need to stay as safe and healthy as possible. Last year, we distributed more than 25,000 such supplies to hundreds of people in Oakland. Second, the team connects participants with services to improve their long-term situation. We assist people in preparing housing applications, getting IDs and other documentation, traveling to service appointments, applying for employment and/or benefits, and addressing other needs. We also partner with health care providers and other local service agencies to have their staff “ride along” with us and provide services to people where they are.
Permanent Supportive Housing:
In addition to offering shelter and transitional housing to veterans, we provide our own permanent housing to formerly homeless veterans and other families who have experienced homelessness. At our housing sites in Oakland and Alameda, we set aside units for HUD-VASH and Shelter + Care, so that people with the deepest needs can access long-term housing.
