HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
High school students between the ages of 14 and 18 are eligible to apply for our free, in-house training programs. After six months, you are eligible to apply for a paid production internship with the YR Media enterprise.
- CORE PROGRAM (10 weeks)
Youth who start with YR media for the first time are enrolled in our foundations "Core" Program. Core participants rotate through four Media Arts tracks: Journalism, Audio Production, Video & Photography, and Design & Illustration.
Core meets in person at our downtown Oakland offices on Wed and Fri, 4:30PM - 6:30PM PST.
- BRIDGE PROGRAM (10 weeks)
Youth who graduate from Core can then enroll in our "Bridge" Program. For 10 weeks Bridge participants concentrate on one Media Arts track of their choosing: Journalism, Audio Production, Video & Photography and Design & Illustration.
Bridge meets in person at our downtown offices on Tues and Thurs, 4:30PM - 6:30PM PST.
- INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Once you have graduated from Media Education, you are eligible to apply for any of the following paid YR Media Internships
- Newsroom
Pitch and write the stories you see featured daily on YR.MEDIA. Hone your skill as a reporter while you build a portfolio of work. Cover the latest arts and culture stories for YR.MEDIA
- Audio Production
Gain hands-on experience in the music industry by producing your own original beats and learning how to license your work for projects at YR Media and elsewhere.
- Video
Build a portfolio of video work and create compelling video stories for YR.MEDIA
- Music Production
Produce music, lead our virtual music studio, and participate in industry partnerships and licensing opportunities as part of YR Music.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Every YR participant has access to mental and physical wellness support designed to help them manage challenges in all areas of their lives through case management, academic and career advising, and healthy food choices. By providing wrap-around services to our young people and supporting them in examining their own experiences, our process promotes resiliency and self-sufficiency.
- CASE MANAGEMENT
On-site case managers conduct needs assessments for all young people and facilitate group and individual counseling sessions. Case managers connect young people to external resources and support as needed, including housing, healthcare, legal support and more.
- ACADEMIC AND CAREER ADVISING
We help every student reach their academic and career goals through workshops, field trips, guest speakers, and individualized guidance on a range of higher educational and professional opportunities. Services include homework assistance, SAT preparation, college application prep, financial aid guidance, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation.
WORKFORCE OLD PROGRAMS:
Youth Radio's Digital Media & Technology Pathways Program is a 9-month Workforce Training program for out-of-school, low-income Oakland youth ages 18-24. During the first 6 months, participants receive digital media instruction and professional development training. During the last 3 months, participants are placed in a paid internship at a local organization where they are able to implement their gained skills.
Pathways participants also receive a full suite of wraparound services including case management, academic and career advising, and therapeutic support (per student request).
Following graduation from the program, students receive a California State recognized On-the-Job Training Certificate of Completion.
- REQUIREMENTS
- Ages 18-24
- Must be Oakland Resident (Youth in transitional housing located outside of Oakland accepted)
- Must have ID & Social Security Card
- Ability to provide proof of household income (if any)
- Completion of basic skills test for reading and math (scheduled upon application)
