At The Crucible, classes are designed for beginners as well as experienced artists and tradespeople. The Crucible’s educational programs serve over 8,500 people each year in over 175 classes and workshops. Classes types include ceramics, bike shop, blacksmithing, enameling, fire & performance, jewelry making, welding, glass flameworking, woodmaking, and more! Our hands-on classes average one instructor for every six students, guaranteeing that each student receives personal attention. Classes and workshops range from $150-$500+, but there are scholarship options available as well.
Throughout the year, we offer weekend and after school classes, as well as weeklong camps during spring and summer for youth, ages 8-18, in the industrial arts. Give your child a creative experience—pouring molten metal, forging a steel hook, bending glass into an illuminated neon sign—there’s no place like The Crucible.
Each year, The Crucible offers over $100,000 in full and partial scholarships to local youth, reserving 20% of spots in all our youth classes for scholarship students. Scholarship applications are considered based economic need, artistic ability and/or promise, and applicants zip code—with priority given first to our neighbors in West Oakland, then Oakland residents, and then Greater Bay Area residents.
Youth Empowerment Programs:
The Crucible loves working with youth ages 8-18! Every year, we connect with more than 5,000 young people through a range of programs. Our engaging and inspiring workshops, summer camps, collaboration with local public schools, and pre-professional training and leadership programs give our wonderful Youth Program participants in-depth knowledge of the creative process, ability to bring their ideas to life, confidence in their artistic risk-taking, and new skills that open doors for creative and vocational exploration.
The Crucible’s Youth Program provides our most engaged students with meaningful pre-professional training, mentoring, and career counseling. Through a graduated learning structure, youth progress through different programs, projects, and classes, culminating—for our most motivated students—in paid positions in the Fuego Youth Leadership Program and/or Pre-Apprentice Program.
