Think Social East Bay is a safe environment for children, teens, and adults to learn social learning concepts through direct instruction, reasoning, and practice. We practice social learning concepts and related social skills by participating in community outings. We think social in the bookstores, video stores, grocery stores, restaurants, parks etc. Much of the social concepts used are based on the work of Michelle Garcia Winner (www.socialthinking.com), who has pioneered the way we teach social skills to people with social cognitive deficits. Michelle argues for an important and more effective model of Cognitive Behavior Therapy as an alternative to behaviorally based social skill “training” approaches. Social learning precedes the social skill!
Social learning challenges do not only reveal themselves during social interactions, but instead they are present during many academic tasks that require highly flexible abstract thinking such as written expressions, reading comprehension of literature, organization and planning of assignments, and some students have tremendous difficulty learning math skills. Thus persons with significant difficulties relating to others interpersonally often have related academic struggles in the classroom particularly as they get older. Typically, we start to require more creative thinking, flexibility and organizational skills to succeed in the classroom starting in 3rd/4th grade. Some students begin to show struggles at that time, while others students manage to hold it together until middle school.
Summer Programs:
Is your child clueless in social situations? Does he talk at length about topics that are of little interest to anyone else in the group? Does she keep teasing her brother even after he starts crying? Are you still setting up play dates for your pre-teen?
Participating in group activities can be daunting for children with social cognitive difficulties. Their challenges can be particularly acute during the summer months when so much time is set aside for fun activities with friends and family. Think Social East Bay’s 6-week summer program teaches children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 18 what’s required to enjoy spending time in groups.
