Social Justice collaborative provides the following service:
UNACCOMPANIED MINOR DEFENSE- The public would be surprised to learn that minors do not have a right to an attorney during a deportation hearing. SJC has been providing free representation to minors in court 2013. SJC assists minor clients in obtaining a variety of types of legal status, including Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Asylum, U and T visas, and others.
ASYLUM FOR FAMILIES- SJC provided legal aid to over 1,200 individuals and their families in 2018. SJC focuses on providing full-scope asylum representation in court to Central Americans and Mexicans seeking asylum from violence & corruption.
APPELLATE LITIGATION- SJC strategically litigates appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This program primarily focuses on carving out good law for asylum seekers who have claims of gender based violence and domestic violence.
WORK AUTHORIZATION- SJC advances clients’ financial stability by obtaining work authorization for clients. In 2018, nearly 300 clients obtained work authorization.
GREEN CARDS- SJC encourages clients to obtain stable legal status in the U.S. by representing an average of 100 individuals each year in obtaining “green cards” or permanent residency status.
ASYLEE FAMILY PETITIONS- SJC helps clients legally bring their family members to the U.S. from abroad once their own asylum applications are approved.

Berkeley- SJC attorneys at our Berkeley office provide consultations each Tuesday and Wednesday from 9-12. We do not schedule consultation appointments for those days. Anyone who wishes to have a consultation with an immigration attorney should come to our Berkeley office either of those days. Due to the demand of immigration services, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to serve you, so we recommend that you arrive early to increase your chances of securing a consultation.
Modesto & San Rafael- To schedule a consultation in one of SJC’s satellite offices (San Rafael or Modesto), you need to schedule a consultation appointment in advance. Please call us at 510.992.3964 to schedule a consultation.
For any of our offices, you will need to bring the following to your consultation:
all documents you have received from any immigration authorities
all documents you have ever submitted to immigration authorities
opies of any tickets, arrests, or convictions you may have
$60 consultation fee (does not apply to minors)
Your appointment will be with an SJC attorney and will last from 30 minutes to an hour.
