Support Groups
Crisis Support Services (CSS) is a nonprofit agency that provides a variety of mental health services to a wide range of persons in varying degrees of crisis. Our primary mission is to assist people in emotional distress, to offer supportive counseling to those in crisis, and prevent suicide. CSS carries out this mission by offering counseling in a safe environment. CSS offers a variety of groups in our North Oakland office.
Counseling Services for Older Adults
Crisis Support Services of Alameda County (CSS) began providing In-Home Counseling services to elderly and frail home-bound older adults in 1993 with a small grant from the Area Agency on Aging. Since 2005, the program has been expanded to provide counseling services to older adults at our agency. Services include group, individual, couples, and family counseling.
School-Based Counseling
Over the past decade, our mental health interns have provided individual and group counseling to many children who are depressed and at risk for self-destructive behavior and/or suicide. Every year, CSS Counselors provide supportive counseling services to hundreds of children and adolescents in Alameda County Public Schools. Common experiences of these students include loss, trauma, violent environments, substance abuse, family conflict, incarceration or death of parents, and minimal community support. Our counselors play an important role in providing assessment, referrals, and ongoing supportive counseling to these youth and their families.
Grief Counseling
CSS provides low-fee counseling to adults who are bereaved or affected by the traumatic loss through suicide, homicide, or sudden loss. Our support groups for suicide survivors and those who have attempted suicide are vital for isolated and at-risk individuals during times of loss.
Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for people who are grieving the death of a significant other. We appreciate how difficult it may be for you to come in and talk to us during this time of loss. We specialize in working with those affected by traumatic loss: accidental death, suicide, and homicide. Many survivors who make use of our services find individual and/or group counseling experiences supportive and reassuring.
Community Education
Connectedness is a common thread that weaves together many of the influences of suicidal behavior and has direct relevance for prevention, which is among the protective factors for suicidality. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines connectedness as the degree to which a person or group is socially close, interrelated, or shares resources with other persons or groups: connectedness between individuals; connectedness of individuals and their families to community organizations; connectedness among community organizations and social institutions.
Crisis Support Services of Alameda County (CSS) has provided comprehensive suicide prevention and intervention services in Alameda County for over 40 years, through our 24-Hour crisis line, our counseling programs for those at highest risk for suicide, and through our Community Education Program. Our Community Education Program serves as one of the many linkages between our agency and those in the community who are in a position of helping. Our program aims to foster connectedness and hope.
NightWatch ®
Crisis Support Services of Alameda County has been providing telephone crisis counseling 24/7 for over 40 years. Our expertise is in dealing with people in crisis and people suffering from chronic mental illness. With the advent of sophisticated technology and telephone equipment, it is no longer necessary for a crisis center to be local to provide competent and expedient crisis intervention.
Our NightWatch ® program provides afterhours crisis intervention telephone counseling services to mental health agencies, paticularly those required to provide 24/7 services.
