A Home Away from Homelessness seeks to radically alter the trajectory of homelessness students' lives by providing a safe and supportive environment that foster their strengths, creativity, and abilities.
We serve the least visible members of the San Francisco Bay Area homeless population: school kids with hopes and dreams deferred who live with their parents in cars, shelters, single-room occupancy hotels or bed-hop from relative to relative.
A Home Away joins the homeless and formerly homeless families to build confidence, skills and community in this at-risk population. Our long term goal is to break the cycle of homelessness through intensive multi-faceted educational and social after-school support.
Programs include:
The Beach House
Play is a crucial component of a healthy childhood. At the Beach House, Home Away hosts small group visits of children ages 5 – 17 from shelters in San Francisco and Marin for an afternoon at a cozy cottage above the sea. On these visits children encounter nature (often for the first time) and have a chance to just be kids.
School House
The School House is a comprehensive after-school learning community for homeless and formerly-homeless students in grades 5-12. Providing wrap-around academic enrichment and social support, School House services include educational testing, mental health support, case management, individual tutoring and homework assistance, as well as a diverse array of enrichment activities designed to promote positive educational and social outcomes.
Summer Program
Home Away offers an academic and outdoor education program during summer months that includes reading, writing, and STEM activities, as well as trips to cultural institutions and natural destinations.
Studies have shown that students regress scholastically over the summer months and can lose up to 2 months of reading skills. Our summer program builds on the school year with fun and interactive, disguised learning activities. Students confront their fears of the unknown as they hurtle down rapids for the first time or navigate a ropes course and they build lasting relationships with mentors that propel them through the school year ahead.
