To reach our vision we partner with residents and community organizations to accomplish the following:
-Promote healthy eating and physical activity at health fairs and community events
-Conduct cooking and physical activity demonstrations
-Teach age-appropriate nutrition and cooking classes
-Implement safe routes to school initiatives
-Provide nutrition education in grocery stores
-Plant gardens with fruits and vegetables
-Develop and implement healthy food and beverage standards and wellness policies
Programs:
- Retail Program: The Alameda County Nutrition Services (ACNS) retail program partners with local grocery store owners to make environmental changes to promote health and well-being. Through grocery store tours and cooking demonstrations patrons get to experience easy cooking tips, delicious easy to make recipes, and educational, fun food facts. The ACNS retail team presents on a monthly basis preparing seasonal recipes and offering food, taste tests.
- Cooking 4 health academy: The goal is to educate and inform the community members on the benefits of taking action to increase fruit and vegetable intake and decrease sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. C4HA is designed for those who may have limited time and/or funds to learn and practice ways to provide healthful meals for themselves and their families.
- Safe routes to school: We support the coordination of Safety Patrols in OUSD by recruiting parents and training them in partnership with the City of Oakland Police Department to create safety at their children’s school site. These Safety Patrol parent advisors, often working alongside, the school-based, OUSD wellness champion, bring awareness to increased pedestrian safety. Over the years, ACNS secured resources to strengthen and expand the Safety Patrol Program from 10 schools in the flatlands and expanding the program to 37 schools yearly.
- Early Chilhood nutrition program:The goal of the program is to engage sites in the process of creating, passing and implementing Nutrition and Physical Activity policies at preschools throughout Alameda County. Policies include increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, more physical activity throughout the school day and reduced or zero screen time. The long range goal is to help prevent chronic disease and improve long-term health at the early childhood sites and surrounding communities. We serve low income communities.
