  • Domestic violence is the primary cause of homelessness for women and children in Alameda County. Recognizing the need for domestic violence services to complement our emergency and housing services for women and children, Building Futures expanded its domestic violence services in the mid-1990s to include critical shelter and support services:

    •crisis hotline 1-866-292-9688

    •a 24-hour crisis hotline

    •a 20-bed safe house emergency shelter with case management, children’s programming and essential support services to secure safe and permanent housing solutions

    •domestic violence outreach, education programs and support groups designed for women in our homeless shelters and the community at large.

    •a semi-annual 40-hour Domestic Violence Counselor Training

    Today Building Futures leads the City of Alameda domestic Violence Task Force and the City of San Leandro Domestic

    Violence Task Force

    Through a range of domestic violence services, Building Futures provides options and support for women seeking alternatives to dangerous relationships and living situations. More than 60 percent of the women in Building Futures’ homeless shelters have experienced family violence at some point in their lives. Those in the most immediate danger are referred to Sister Me Home, our safe house shelter, or other domestic violence shelters. Our range of support services and case management assist women and children in crisis rebuild their lives free from homelessness and family violence.
